Library Manager and Supervisor Learning Pathway
This badge is issued by the Massachusetts Library System and reflects competencies defined and validated through MLS's statewide needs assessment, subject-matter review, instructional design standards, and program evaluation processes. This badge recognizes demonstrated proficiency across six competency areas essential to management and supervision in libraries. Competencies Communication Essentials for Supervisors: Communicates clearly and purposefully to support effective team management, alignment, and positive service interactions. Supervising Teams: Supports effective team function through clarity, structure, and supervision. Project and Task Management for Supervisors: Effectively manages library projects, task workflows, and budgets to meet goals and build habits of continuous improvement. Ethics, Policy and Accountability: Applies library policies, legal responsibilities, and ethical reasoning to make equitable, transparent, and responsible supervisory decisions. Coaching and Feedback: Provides timely, constructive feedback and coaching to support staff. Evaluation of Programs and Services: Evaluates library programs and services using diverse data collection methods to gather insights, make improvements, and show impact. or Organizational Knowledge and Library Operations: Applies knowledge of library structures, service standards, and cross-department workflows to run day-to-day operations smoothly and identify opportunities for service improvements. or Promoting a Healthy Work Environment: Promotes a healthy work environment by using communication, responsiveness, and supportive supervisory practices that enhance staff well-being.
